HOWARD
JONES
14th July 2002, Pennington’s
Travelling back in time, the audience danced and woh-oh-oh-ed
in all the right places as the one-time chart topper conducted
his midi-compatible back-up band at the touch of a button.
Minus mime artist Jed but mixing in the talents of renowned
guitarist Robin Boult and progressive house duo dba, the
set-up was to imitate former days when the hits were aplenty
and the hair resembled the tail feathers of a parrot.
Two decades on Jones’ sound has progressed to blend garage
with house as his most recent offerings, Collective Heartbeat
and Let the People Have Their Say, suggest. It’s the old
classics such as New Song and What Is Love? that win hands
down though, and Jones obliges accordingly with a generous
round-up of his best-known works.
